  1. Professional Background

    1.  Education & Certifications: Dr. Nieuwenhuizen earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Marshall University. He earned two master’s degrees from the University of Stellenbosch and Southern Oregon university respectively. These included a master’s degree Clinical Pastoral Care and Organizational Development. Dr. Nieuwenhuizen’s academic journey started out with a BA degree in philosophy and theology and a subsequent B.Th (M.Div equivalent) degree at the University of Stellenbosch.

    2. Specialties & Experience: Dr. Nieuwenhuizen has been doing individual therapy work for 30 years. He worked in a variety of settings which included large integrated health care systems to small private practice settings. He started out in clinical pastoral care, working in Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town South Africa and Rogue Valley Hospital in Medford Oregon, working in primary care, hospice and hospital settings. During the height of the opiate crisis, he helped develop and manage treatment at the Maternal Addiction Recovery Center in Cabell Huntington Hospital in WV. Since 2018 he worked in private practice in Tacoma Washington.

    3. Teaching & Supervision: Dr. Nieuwenhuizen was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at Marshall University, served as a member of the Marshall University Senate and as the Chair and founding member of Healthy Connections in Huntington West Virginia. During this time, he supervised psychiatry residents and clinical psychology students.

    4. Licensing & Telehealth: Dr. Nieuwenhuizen is licensed in the State of Washington and hold a PSYPACT license. He provides individual therapy via telehealth to clients from Washington and PSYPACT states.
